Christmas

I just wanted to take this opportunity to wish each and every one of you a very Blessed and Merry Christmas.  I hope you have a wonderful break to spend with family and friends.
I am very grateful for each of my students and all they have accomplished this school year.  I am truly blessed with a wonderful class who cares about each other and their education.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

4th Grade Literature

Just a few helpful hints on the 4th Grade Literature

Quality Questions:  The students only have to chose 4 of the 8.  If they chose Describe in detail, then their question should start out: Describe in detail why . . . or In your opinion, explain why . . . .

Their answer to each question must be on the back.  The questions should be made after reading a chapter or two.

I told the students to beware of the Compare and Contrast choices at the top.  These are usually harder for the students.

The other worksheet, Scene Setter needs to be filled out after reading all the assigned chapters.  I also told the students they may want to use a Thesaurus to help them find good descriptive words.

If your child still has a question, please have them come to me in the morning or at recess and I will gladly go over the work.

Happy Reading!

Advent Pals

As you all know, we have picked our Advent Pals.  The students are very excited and hopefully are going to try really hard to keep their pal a secret!
Here is what we will be doing over the next 3 weeks:

Week 1:  Blessing - due this Wednesday.  Students can write, have a parent write, or type their blessings with any Advent designs they want.  We talked about how a blessing is a type of prayer.
ex:  I bless you with peace and happiness this Advent Season.  May you be excited for the coming of Christ.

Week 2:  Acrostic Poem with Advent Pal's name.  Write the student's name down a piece of paper and each letter of the student's name is made into a word or saying about that student or Advent.

Week 3:  Advent gift.  Please do NOT spend more than $5 on a gift.  The students are welcome to make/bake something for their pal instead of a store bought gift.

We discussed that they should be doing good deeds for each other.  They may also give their pals little notes or treats throughout the weeks.  Again, this can be something they have made at home.

Our focus is on Advent.  I am trying to get them to think of others first and their Christmas list last.

Don't forget about the PJ drive and we will be heading back to the Food Pantry on Dec. 15th.  If you have not signed up, please let me know asap.

Time Line

I'm so sorry that I am just now posting information for the timeline.
I have asked each student to bring in 10 pictures to go along with the timeline of their life.  The pictures do not have to be an exact picture of what the student wrote about, just a picture of them at that age.  I am fine with the pictures being printed out on a word document.  Nothing fancy.
We are going to place these pictures on a sentence strip, so please don't make them large.
Also, if you need me to print the pictures and you have them on a word document, just email me the attachment and I will print the pictures at school.  (jdee@stphilipky.org)
I hope this is helpful.  I can't wait to see all of the pictures.
Thank you and enjoy your trip down memory lane!

Report Cards

It's so true that time flies!   Our first quarter was here and gone.  I can't believe we are already in our second week of the second quarter.  I have enjoyed every minute with your children.  They have come so far already and I can't wait to see their growth throughout the year.

Report cards were issued today.  Each child has their own to bring home, so make sure you check with them.  Also the paper to sign up for conferences should be in your red folder.  Conferences are optional, however I would be more than happy to see each of you on Monday, November 5th.

Social Studies Test

This Friday we are having our Social Studies test on the 13 states and capitals from unit 3.  The students have these 13 listed in their binders.  The test will be matching, so they will just need to be able to recognize which capital goes with which state.

Next Tuesday we will be having our Chapter 6 Social Studies test.  This will be where the students need to study their outlines.  They have all of the answers as of today (9/26/12).  The test will consist of multiple choice, matching, and several short answers.  The students have everything they need for the test in their outline.

Reading Challenge

The students and I have decided to do the Scholastic Reading Challenge this fall.
We will be joining with kids across the country to side with either cats or dogs in a pledge to read every day to help make their team reading champions - while also helping to donate 250,000 books to kids in need.    All we need to do is read at home for at least 20 minutes each day.
It's all part of an exciting reading campaign called Paws for Reading.  I have given each student a log sheet to keep track of their minutes read.  You or your student can log these onto the website (www.scholastic.com/paw) or I am more than happy to do this at school.
Thank you for your support and happy reading!!!

This Week's Tests

This Thursday will be our first Religion test.  The students have taken notes, if you need a copy you can find the notes above, under the notes/outline tab.  The test will consist of 10 multiple choice, 5 fill in from a word list, and 2 short answers ( notes # 13 and 14).

This Friday will be our first Spelling Test.  The students each received their list of words on Monday.  They should have a paper with them.  If your student can not find their list please let me know before Friday's test.  Maybe have your child on Monday night write their words in their planner as practice which also makes it easier to keep track of their words.

Any questions please email me.

Welcome Back!  I was excited to see so many smiling faces this morning.  I really missed them over the summer.
We already have our first project in Science but we need some help.  We are studying the Solar System and would like to create the system with Styrofoam.  I know in the past, students were able to buy a Solar System kit at Walmart or just the Styrofoam balls.  After we get all the supplies then I will be asking for volunteers to help us paint our planets.  I was planning on starting this the week of August 27th.
Thank you!!!

Welcome Back!

Welcome Back to School

A Funny School Poem for Kids
"Dear students, the summer has ended.
The school year at last has begun.
But this year is totally different.
We're going to only have fun.

"We won't study any mathematics,
and recess will last all day long.
Instead of the pledge of allegiance,
we'll belt out a rock-and-roll song.

"We'll only play games in the classroom.
You're welcome to bring in your toys.
It's okay to run in the hallways.
It's great if you make lots of noise.

"For homework, you'll play your Nintendo.
You'll have to watch lots of T.V.
For field trips we'll go to the movies
and get lots of candy for free.

"The lunchroom will only serve chocolate
and triple fudge sundaes supreme."
Yes, that's what I heard from my teacher
before I woke up from my dream.

Testing

We start testing tomorrow and will finish next Wednesday.
Please help your child by making sure they get a good night sleep, a good breakfast, and a healthy ("brain food") snack.
I stressed the importance of taking their time and also not to STRESS.
I told them to do the BEST they could and we would be proud.

Study Stack Website

We have figured out the issue with the flashcard site! The students were using a different site then I had set up. We tried accessing the site from the Blog and the new link appears to be working!
Students can use this to type their notes for any class and be able to study using games and quizzes.

Flashcard website

Some of the students informed me this afternoon that they were not able to access this website. I tried it and had no problems. I will ask Mrs. Wagner tomorrow and maybe have each student try it out so they are sure of what they are doing.
Sorry if you couldn't get to your notes. Maybe next time!

New Website

I have added a link to a website where our students can make flashcards for any subject. Each student has a username and password and they have already typed in their science notes. There are games they can play and quizzes they can take all created from the information they have typed.
Check it out!
I hope this is a useful tool for some, especially if you are looking for a new way to study or even pretest yourself on the material.

Projects

I have finally upload the students' Social Studies PowerPoint projects! We added animation to our slides that do not show when uploaded to Google Docs. Therefore, in order to view each slide you need to click (at least 3 times) on each slide to see the textboxes appear. Some words are out of the caption bubbles due to the same issue as the animation. The students did an excellent job and we wanted to share. I hope you are able to view the slides relatively hassle free.

Look under the Projects tab!

That time of year. . . .

It's that time of year for illness. We have been very lucky that all of us have been rather healthy. However, I know it won't last forever. Therefore, I just wanted to remind you that if your child(ren) is not in school, you can pick up their assignments in the library. It can also be arranged, if I know early enough, to pick up assignments at lunch time or the work can be sent home with another student.

Students always seem overwhelmed when they return to school to see their missing assignments along with that days assignments needed to be finished.
I try to send home just what is necessary and not the extras, but the work can pile up.
Thank you!
