4th Grade Story

The 4th Grade and I created our first story on the IPad. The App is called Next Sentence. I started the story with a title and first line. Then we took turns writing our own part of the story. We could only use 24 words and the only thing we saw was the last four words from the previous person. So needless to say our story became very interesting. Look for future class stories, but in the mean time read and enjoy! The Unusual Pet One day Max was taking his ostrich for a walk. The ostrich broke loose, bit someone, and ran off. So there was a pig and there was a turkey and the pig said try to eat me and the pig tried to run really fast. The pet was half horse and half dog. It was really fast and would jump 20 feet into the air and is really cool. The animal ran off and bounced up and down! Then the animal ate two cows and chicken. The animal was very, very, very, crazy. The very, very, very, crazy pet crushed everything in sight including me. The crazy pet ran all over the place and had a tiny accident. A little bunny was doing the monkey dance. Then he jumped to Walmart and bought some bananas and made a banana split. Bob went to the pet store. He got a fish and named it Lucy. But Lucy was an unusual pet because she's upside down. The Guinness pig ended up dying, hanging upside down because a snake ate the guinea pig.

Many of you have tried and enjoyed Study Stacks.  This is a free program that is offered to you.  All you have to do is sign up and you can create any flashcards that you want to study.  You can find a link to this site under the Notes/Outline Tab or to the right under Helpful Websites.

I like how it gives you a ready-made test as well as the flashcards and games.  I will try to create more stacks and link them to the Blog.  However, you may like to create your own!

A Few Updates

4th Grade is completing their first chapter in Math.  They will be taking their test tomorrow.  Next up will be a quick review of addition and subtraction.  Please have your child practice their math facts, whether addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, or all four.  The more confident the students are with their facts, the more confident they are in new skills being taught.  Sumdog is a favorite site.

3rd Grade is getting very close to finishing their first chapter in Math.  Their test will be sometime next week.  Please practice addition and subtraction facts as well as counting and recognizing money.  The students love playing Sumdog which is a great site for practicing facts.

We have taken our first Science Test and will be moving on to Kentucky History.  The students were able to do a few experiments in the classroom involving density, physical and chemical changes, and properties of matter.

Testing Week

As you all know we begin standardized testing this Tuesday.  We will continue to test through Friday of this week and then the following Tuesday and Wednesday the following week.
Below I have posted a few tips for parents.

What Parents Can Do At Home

Test-Taking Tips

• Acknowledge test-taking anxiety as normal, but stay positive.
In class we discussed that it is normal to be nervous, but we need to try and relax.  Just try our best.

• Encourage your child to think positive thoughts like “I can do this!”
We talked about how to eliminate their choices and to go with the choice they felt was the best answer.

• Go over the test-taking tips with your child.
Relax, stay calm, try your best, take deep breaths if feeling nervous, concentrate, try the answers, work out the problems, etc.

• Adequate rest makes a difference! Make sure your child goes to bed at a reasonable time; being active earlier in the day (not right before bed) can help kids get to sleep.

• Nutrition also influences how well children do on test; a good breakfast is important, but a large meal right before the test can be distracting.

Pack a healthy snack - we will be needing BRAIN FOOD!

Remember it's okay not to know everything - unlike class tests, these tests will have some questions designed to challenge the limits of your knowledge.

Cold Season

HELP!  We are in need of tissues in our classroom.  With the cold and flu season we have been using at least a box a day.  If you can help by sending in a box with your child we would greatly appreciate your thoughtfulness.
Thank you.

St. Philip Tournament

This week looks to be very busy, yet fun!  We have a lot going on in school with our regular classes and our field trip on Thursday.  Don't forget our pep rally on Wednesday afternoon around 2:30.  We also have each evening packed with basketball games.  I hope to see each of you cheering on our Rebels and Rebelettes this week.

GOOD LUCK TO ALL!

Catholic Schools Week

Just a little "Thank You" for all our parents at St. Philip.
Thank you for the support you not only give to me, but to our students.  Without the love and support of family, our community at St. Philip would not be as successful.
Thank you for the many birthday wishes, cards, and gifts.  I loved each and everyone of them, the banana bread was delicious not to mention the candy!

I can't believe that half of this school year is behind us!  I just wanted to let you know that I have updated the grades for the 2nd Quarter.
