FYI Christmas Party

As we are rapidly approaching the end of our Advent season together, we will be celebrating next Friday with a small party after mass.  Each student has picked a person from our room as an Advent Pal.  They were to do random acts of kindness for this person as well as a blessing and a poem.  Each student can buy a small gift, no more than $5, for their Advent pal or make something nice.   Also, Ms. Cassie Neltner is our room mother, so you can contact her about the party.

Thanks for all your help!

A Poem to Leave You With

WHOSE CHILD IS THIS?

Author Unknown

"Whose child is this?" I asked one day

Seeing a little one out at play

"Mine", said the parent with a tender smile

"Mine to keep a little while

To bathe his hands and comb his hair

To tell him what he is to wear

To prepare him that he may always be good

And each day do the things he should"

"Whose child is this?" I asked again

As the door opened and someone came in

"Mine", said the teacher with the same tender smile

"Mine, to keep just for a little while

To teach him how to be gentle and kind

To train and direct his dear little mind

To help him live by every rule

And get the best he can from school"

"Whose child is this?" I ask once more

Just as the little one entered the door

"Ours" said the parent and the teacher as they smiled

And each took the hand of the little child

"Ours to love and train together

Ours this blessed task forever."

We will begin testing on Wednesday, April 15th.
Some good testing practices are listed below:
1.  Get plenty of sleep
2.  Eat a healthy breakfast before school
3.  Bring a healthy snack - we need brain food
4.  Bring a water bottle
5.  Try your best and smile :)

Please encourage you child(ren) to try their best and to take their time.

What Parents Can Do At Home

Test-Taking Tips

• Acknowledge test-taking anxiety as normal, but stay positive.
In class we discussed that it is normal to be nervous, but we need to try and relax.  Just try our best.

• Encourage your child to think positive thoughts like “I can do this!”
We talked about how to eliminate their choices and to go with the choice they felt was the best answer.

• Go over the test-taking tips with your child.
Relax, stay calm, try your best, take deep breaths if feeling nervous, concentrate, try the answers, work out the problems, etc.

• Adequate rest makes a difference! Make sure your child goes to bed at a reasonable time; being active earlier in the day (not right before bed) can help kids get to sleep.

• Nutrition also influences how well children do on test; a good breakfast is important, but a large meal right before the test can be distracting.

Pack a healthy snack - we will be needing BRAIN FOOD!

Remember it's okay not to know everything - unlike class tests, these tests will have some questions designed to challenge the limits of your knowledge.

Crown of Thorns

We have been watching the Holy Heroes Lenten Adventures and this was today's lesson.  The students asked me to put the directions to the Crown of Thorns on the blog.

Dough Crown of Thorns
Today we are going to talk about another great way to help your children in their Lenten sacrifices. First you will need to make the dough crown of thorns, which is not difficult, and is a great visual reminder to the children of Christ's suffering. It also helps children if you explain that our sins bring pain to Jesus, but that we can comfort Jesus by our sacrifices and good works.
Crown of Thorns craftWith each sacrifice he makes, that child pulls a toothpick out of the crown. The idea is to remove all the "thorns" from the crown by Easter. I always put in a lot more toothpicks than I think are necessary, yet it is probably not enough, because kids can really make an effort to do nice things as they see the tangible impact on the crown. If need be, we can always make another crown or we just continue with the bean jar when we are done with the crown of thorns. It is also nice to decorate the crown after the thorns are all out for the Easter table. It is a nice reminder of what can be done out of love.
You will need:
4 cups flour
1 cup salt
Water
Toothpicks
Directions:
Mix flour and salt. Mix enough water to make a stiff clay. (A little warmth helps dissolve the salt.) Knead until smooth to remove any air bubbles. Roll three long ropes and loosely braid them.Form braid into a circle and stick toothpicks loosely throughout the entire crown (If they are embedded too deeply they cannot be pulled out intact.) Bake at 350° F for an hour or until it is dry and light brown.

Stations of the Cross

We will be reading the stations next Friday, March 13th.  Please come and join us at 2:50pm in church.

Welcome Back!

I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas and is looking forward to a great new year.  I am so happy that we are all back together and seem healthy.
I reminded the students to use hand sanitizer, to wash their hands, and to not put anything in their mouths.  Hopefully, we can all make it through the "flu" season with little to no illnesses.
